I took the children on a local walk to the Gorge to look for some more Lichen as part of our Mountain habitat. We found some great samples of different types and the walk did us all good after sooo much rain!
It was soooo fun to see the children get excited when spotting the
lichen growing around, I loved to see there enthusiasm in what they
found! Can't wait to do more field trips next term!

Fungus finding { woodland/forest habitat}
With our animal study each week we have looked at a different habitat, this time around it was the Forest or woodland. We took the children to one of our favourite places, Holly Bank and went searching for Fungus and for Lichen. We found some great specimens and had a wonderful family time out too!
What is one of your favourite places to go?? Have you ever been out fungus spotting??

Desert science experiment
This week we were looking at Desert habitats so to go along with that on science Wednesday we did an experiment to show how cactus expands when it rains.
Here is what you need......
Water
Folded cardstock (like a fan)
A dish
tape or Staples to hold the card in a tube shape
PATIENCE!!!
We put the "cactus" in the dish and poured water in...... We all honestly thought that it would happen quite instantly, that is that it would soak up all the water and probably fall over, or simply would fall over!! (I know, not the most positive thinking.....)
But after about 15 minutes when nothing happened we then added a water "cactus" This soon fell over once the base was wet!
Ummmmmmm, Zeke then decided to ROLL the "cactus" into the water and then stand up again!! And what do you suppose, it WORKED!! From there is slowly opened up and spread out all the folds and STILL WAS STANDING!!!! YAY! YAY! Yippee!!!
It was fun, messy and a good lesson in waiting!!!
